On the front page of this edition, you will discover Wecyclers (Lagos, Nigeria), laureate of the King Baudouin Prize for Development in Africa. On 12 June Wecyclers, a waste management start-up in Lagos (Nigeria), received the King Baudouin African Development Prize, in the presence of HM King Philippe and HM Queen Mathilde. The Prize recognises ongoing efforts in the area of innovation made by Wecyclers, which sees waste collection not merely as an end in itself, but as a way of bringing about social development in the poorest neighbourhoods of Lagos, a city with several million inhabitants.
You’ll discover also the King Baudouin Foundation’s support for initiatives to promote democracy in Europe or the reception of refugee minors, for medical and scientific research, for international philanthropy and many other activities. On pages 30 and 31 you will find an article over Myriad Canada and James Thoms, who wanted to finance clinical trials to help treat millions of patients, including his grand-daughter who suffers from an incurable genetic disorder that causes nerve tumors.
