Thanks to a very generous gift from Francis and Eleanor Shen (Toronto), KBF CANADA has the opportunity to finance an exhibition of Cao Fei, artist of international stature, at the Centre Pompidou (Paris).

Goals

  • From June 2019 to August 2020, to organize an exhibition of Cao Fei (http://www.caofei.com), Chinese artist
  • This presentation is the international debut of the artist’s long term research project “Hong Xia”.

Cao Fei

  • Cao Fei is an artist of international stature. She is one of the most celebrated Chinese artists working today.
  • Her practice is influenced by the transformations that have taken place in China over the past three decades. She is also addressing topics of a globalized society and workforce. ‘Her artistic language straddles between reality and fantasy. It translates elements from popular and gaming cultures, such as cinema, animation, cosplay, music (Cantopop and hip-hop) and social media, resulting in a humorous and engaging oeuvre that reflects on our ever-shifting contemporary condition.’
  • She was the finalist of the Hugo Boss Prize in 2010, and was nominated best artist during at the 10th Chinese Contemporary Art Award in 2016.
  • She also represented China at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007.

The Centre Pompidou

KBF CANADA is working with the The Friends of the Centre Pompidou  and the Centre Pompidou. The Centre Pompidou houses the Musée National d’Art Moderne, which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe, and the second largest in the world. It was officially opened on 31 January 1977 by President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. As of 2006, the Centre Pompidou has had over 180 million visitors since 1977. In 2018, 3.55 million visitors came to the museum.
