Context

– There are just over 18.5 million children in South Africa, spread out geographically over 9 provinces.

– Many patients do not have health insurance. Refer to the diagram for a geographic context and statistics.

– South Africa has a grave shortage of paediatric surgeons. According to the South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons, there are only 6 qualified Paediatric Surgeons in the Gauteng Province causing massive backlogs and waiting lists.

Goals and activities

– To provide state-of-the-art technology, equipment and materials for medical treatment and/or surgical operations for children who do not have the means to cover these expenses.

– To provide fellowships and ongoing training for clinicians to become experts in their specialist areas with existing Universities and Academic Hospitals

Myriad Canada is working with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital on this project. The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital (NMCH) is the only Children’s Hospital in the Gauteng Province that also serves the surrounding 5 provinces including referrals from 12 countries forming the SADC (Southern African Developing Communities).  The NMCH is a 200-bed state-of-the-art referal facility that has begun providing tertiary/quaternary-level care to appropriately referred children of South Africa and the SADC region. Currently, the NMCH is only the second dedicated paediatric hospital in the country and the fifth in Africa, but the first of its kind in Africa to provide holistic child-and-family-centred care;  contributing to a reduction in morbidity and mortality rates. The NMCH also serves as a training platform for three Universities in the Gauteng Province viz. University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria and Sefako Makgatho University. Ultimately, NMCH stands out as a concrete testament to the legacy of Nelson Mandela, reinforcing his vision of giving every child a chance to live and thrive.
