Nearly 1/3 of Pakistan is under water. Devastating flash floods have already killed over 1,300 people and damaging or destroying close to 700,000 homes across the country.
As Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s Climate Minister, told the AFP News Agency: “It’s all one big ocean, there’s no dry land to pump the water out. [It is a] crisis of unimaginable proportions.”
In Aisa, people are 15 times more likely to die from climate impacts. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, has said that Pakistan is facing a ‘monsoon on steroids’ and has urged the world to come to that country’s aid. “Let’s stop sleepwalking towards the destruction of our planet by climate change,” he said. “Today, it’s Pakistan. Tomorrow, it could be your country.”
It is estimated that at least 1/3 of the victims are children and that over 33 million Pakistanis (one in seven) have been impacted by the flooding. Crops have been wiped out, small businesses destroyed, schools washed away – this all in the midst of a severe economic crisis gripping the country.
