Context

– In India, areas inhabited by tribals tend to be the poorest even though the lands are among the wealthiest districts in terms of natural resources.

– The tribal belt through the Central Indian heartland is home to 75 percent of India’s indigenous tribal communities.

– Of the 900 blocks present here, 72 percent have a Poverty Head Count Ratio exceeding 50 percent, and 64 percent of the blocks are rain-fed.

– The communities live in abject poverty, with small and fragmented land holdings, face persistent and acute food insecurity, and also have few employment opportunities beyond rain-fed agriculture and forest based livelihoods.

Goals

– Alleviate poverty by multi-sector interventions such as education, water, sanitation and hygiene, and nutrition, along with ongoing livelihood activities for households, thereby holistically improving quality of life.

– Location of the project: Central Indian Tribal Belt – Gujarat, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Odisha

Activities

– Soil and water conservation and management

– High value agriculture integrated with drip irrigation and mulching along with poly house nurseries for healthy seedling, solar irrigation, market linkages

– Animal husbandry with focus on small ruminants towards health management, breed improvement, better management practices and market linkages

– Irrigation assets creation for families to take up year round crops, along with focus on water management for long term benefits to the community

Entrepreneurship education among families

The project is based on learnings from the successes of the ‘Lakhpati Kisan’ model.
