Burundian refugees

Burundian refugees living in Rwanda, in the refugee camp as well as in urban centres, face a number of problems related to living in exile:

• A lack of the means of subsistence;
• Difficulties in schooling children and young people;
• Despair resulting from the insecurity of living conditions;
• Juvenile delinquency resulting from idleness;
• Psychological disorders.

The objective of this project is thus to help Burundian refugees to emerge from extreme poverty.

Activities.

• Provision of training for women that will enable them to support their families.
• Provision of microcredits for female refugees working in groups of solidarity who wish to develop activities that will generate profitable incomes. These women are widows, with children aged under 5 and live in great poverty. Their monthly incomes are between RWF 50,000 and 100,000 (USD 60-120), which prevent them from covering their basic needs of housing and food for the family, let alone schooling for their children The provision of microcredit can avoid them having to beg and enable them to increase their income by managing a small business, to survive and satisfy their basic needs.
• Coaching for these women so as to maximise their chances of success with their small businesses.
• Provide psychological support to women and their children following the traumas they have experienced.

Success indicators for the project

• Number of microcredits provided;
• Rate of microcredit repayment, enabling the money to be re-used to help other women as well as increasing the social impact of the project.

Myriad Canada is working with the Maison Shalom in Rwanda to implement this project. The Maison Shalom is a non-governmental humanitarian organisation, which was set up in Burundi at the height of the crisis in October 1993 to create a new generation and so avoid the cycles of violence. Following the political and security crisis that has rocked Burundi since 2015, the Maison Shalom Burundi went into exile in Rwanda. Between 2016 and 31 December 2017, 367 households comprising 1,300 people have benefited from a microcredit. The rate of repayment is 64%.
