To provide scholarships for underprivileged and talented young women in Afghanistan to attend Gawharshad University, a private not-for-profit university in Kabul.

The Ministry of Education in Afghanistan has ranked Gawharshad University the number one private university in the country.

Girls are selected according to strict criteria of academic ability and financial need.

Once a student is identified and accepted, her tuition will be paid for four years if she meets her obligations each year.

The school year for Afghan universities begins in August. There are two semesters per year, the second starting in April. Graduation requires eight semesters or four years.

The tuition costs at Gawharshad University depend on the programme and currency rate with $1 Canadian equaling $58 Afghan (2020 09 17).

    • Law, Political Science and Economics cost $205 CAD per semester
    • Engineering and Computer Science $247 CAD per semester
    •  Defence Law (1 year post-graduate programme) $1077 CAD

The Fund ‘Friends of University Women Helping Afghan Women’ at KBF CANADA is working closely with  Gawharshad University  to provide scholarships to the brighest and most vulnerable women.

Dr. Sima Samar (MD) founded Gawharshad Institute of Higher Education (now Gawharshad University) in 2010 to support more students at the university level. She had special concern for young women so they could take an active role in the social, political and economic life of their country. More than 30 per cent of the students at Gawharshad are women.

Dr. Samar was Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (2004-2019) and is now on the UN High Level Panel on Internal Displacement and Special Envoy of the Afghan President for Human Rights and International Affairs, among other roles.

Numerous governments and human rights and women’s rights organizations have recognized Dr. Samar for her compassion and outstanding leadership. Her awards and honors include:

The Order of Canada; Voices of Courage Award, Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children; Doctor of Laws (hon.) University of Alberta and Carleton University, Canada; and ranked three times by Forbes magazine among the 100 Most Powerful Women.
