Context

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict erupted between two rival factions in Sudan, resulting in heavy fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country. Since the conflict began, the death toll is reported to be over 13,900, thousands of people have been injured, and thousands more are missing or held captive by either of the warring parties.

Sudan is currently experiencing the worst refugee crisis of our time. Since the conflict began, there have been almost 10 million people displaced internally and in nearby Egypt, Ethiopia, Chad, South Sudan, and Uganda.

It has been named the worst displacement crisis in the world. 3 million children have fled the widespread violence in Sudan, making it the world’s worst child displacement catastrophe. There are several reports of women and girls being abducted, forcefully married, facing sexual assaults, or held for ransom. Hundreds of thousands of children in Sudan are malnourished and at risk of death, especially with over 70% of healthcare facilities non-functional due to the fighting, and aid remains mostly inaccessible for the most part.

Goals

Provide support to internally displaced Sudanese communities through emergency relief in Sudan.

Activities

Activities may include:

  • Provide support with housing, food, employment, mental health and educational needs.
  • Provide emergency relief to Sudanese refugees.
  • Ensure access to healthcare and medical services.

Myriad Canada is working with two local organizations on this project:

  • Sudan Medical Care Foundation: Created in 2002 with the mission to improve public health by advancing the education of Sudanese medical professionals around the globe, they have put in place systems that consider some of the most vulnerable populations in Sudan. Transportation, relocation, housing and medical supplies are at the top of the priority list.
  • Hadhreen: This NGO has been active for the past 10 years bringing much needed programming for elders’ centers, schools and various health care facilities. Their programs are set to respond to the most urgent needs in Sudan.

Myriad Canada’s role is to carry out charitable activities across the globe in accordance with its charitable purposes. We control and monitor the use of funds and the progress of charitable activities to ensure that donations made to Myriad Canada have the greatest impact in accordance with donors’ expressed wishes.
