Context

Despite global improvements in education enrolment over the last decade, there are still 263 million youth around the world who are out of school, with 63 million of those being ‘primary school-aged children’.  In sub-Saharan Africa, education enrolment is particularly low, with one in every three children, adolescents, and youth being out of school.

In Zambia public spending on education constitutes only 2.9% of GDP, and the share of total government expenditure spent on education has eroded every year since 2015. While primary school enrolment is high, education quality is low, and literacy rates among young adults fall under regional averages.

The issue of educational access is not simply physical, but also economic and social. Primary and secondary school age children in the poorest countries are nine times more likely to be out of school than those in the richest countries. This inequality has led to multi­generational social and economic consequences internationally, including extreme poverty.

In response to this situation, Zambia created a community school model where communities could operate schools independently, especially in rural areas. However, the government does not provide consistent funding to community schools.  Often this results in untrained and poorly paid teachers, a lack of management and school supplies, and a substandard curriculum.

 

Goal

The goal of this project is to provide Nkunga Community School with the eSchool 360 model-access to a proven quality education that was not possible before. This project will improve student academic performance and attendance by hiring teachers and enrolling students.  Additionally, we provide coaching, training and basic school supply kits (exercise books, pens, pencils, chalk, paper).

Activities and Key Performance Indicators

For each project stage, we have provided SMART (Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant-Time Bound) objectives and goals to make the project a success:

Stage 1: Hire & Train Teachers (Month 1)

A Call for Applications will be posted as soon as the project begins; Conduct 1 week of initial training with a goal of 100% attendance; Assign Teacher Supervisor to new school and lead training for teachers.

Stage 2: Procurement of Supplies (Month 1)

Purchase basic school supply kits (exercise books, pens, pencils, chalk, paper) for Term 1.

Stage 3: Enrol 200 Students and Conduct Pre-Program Assessment for Students (Months 2-5)

Enrol students and create registers for new classrooms; Conduct initial termly assessment across all core subjects and grades.

Stage 4: Program Rollout & Teacher Performance (Months 2 to 14)

90% of teachers improve performance by 10% over the school year, as measured by weekly scorecards. These scorecards are filled in during each Teacher Supervisor observation and coaching session – the Teacher Supervisors conduct these throughout the term; 100% of teachers attend all monthly professional development training offered; Average attendance rate of 95% for teachers during the school term.

Stage 5: Post-Program Assessment & Analysis (Months 14-15)

Post-program assessment includes a final assessment across all core subjects and annual standardized literacy and numeracy assessments; Improve termly assessment scores in core subject by 5% over the first academic year; 70% of students to pass end of year exams in core subjects.

This model is currently running in 40+ schools and impacting over 6,000 students.
