Context
The level of education in the Democratic Republic of Congo is ranked by UNESCO at 156 out 174 countries. Despite the government’s efforts to provide free primary education, access to education remains a challenge for more than 30% of primary school children and 40% of secondary school children.
This situation is the result of numerous factors, including poor rural infrastructure, overpopulated classrooms and the reality that some parents will choose to send their male children to school while girls remain at home to help with domestic tasks. Indeed – the rate of female high-school drop-out is twice that of boys.
Goals
This project seeks to improve access to quality education, ensuring equitable access for both boys and girls at the Kivu International School.
Activities
This project will contribute to the school’s ongoing activities including scholarships for at-risk students; academic courses; cultural and recreational activities; and the school library.
Myriad Canada is working with Kivu International School on this project, a non-profit that focuses on education and self-development of children and youth who will become the responsible entrepreneurs of tomorrow and create a more stable future for the DRC.
Since its inception in 2017, the Kivu International School has increased its enrollment from 97 students to over 250, with 44% female students and 40 scholarships offered (2020).
